"Yoga therapy is that facet of the ancient science of Yoga that focuses on health and wellness at all levels of the person: physical, psychological, and spiritual. Yoga therapy focuses on the path of Yoga as a healing journey that brings balance to the body and mind through an experiential understanding of the primary intention of Yoga: awakening of Spirit, our essential nature."
~Joseph LaPage, M.A., Integrative Yoga Therapy (U.S.A.)
As business professional, you likely incur a bit of daily stress. Stress is not always a bad thing, but when it becomes chronic, it can affect your health and well-being. Science understands the relationship between chronic stress and dis-ease. Chronic stress is the catalyst in most dis-ease and affects the healing process.
Let's face it, we are not going to eliminate the stressors in life. However, Yoga Therapy gives you the tools that help you handle life's stressors in a way that helps you attain and maintain good health.
The initial step to de-stressing is to calm the mind by learning how to slow down and be present. When the mind is calm, you can stop the mental chatter (internal dialog) that keeps you looping into a stressed state of being.
Yoga Therapy is not physical therapy. Yoga Therapy incorporates the ancient wisdom of yoga that includes much more than the physical movement called asana. Whereas asana has its place in yoga, it is not the essential healing tool. Yoga Therapy incorporates knowledge of the correlation of all aspects of being human (physical, emotional, and spiritual) with its therapeutic techniques. These techniques draw from Ayurveda (science of life/longivity), Tantra (science of subtle energy), and Yoga (uniting with one's true self, A/K/A "awakening").
Breath is one of the foundational techniques used in Yoga Therapy. When stress and strong emotions like fear and anger are present, the airways between the nose and the lungs constrict resulting in shortness of breath and rapid breathing. Pranayamas, which are yogic breathing techniques, help calm the body and open airways. Studies show yogic breathing brings in 5 times more oxygen.
Meditation and Yoga Nidra are another yogic techniques used in Yoga Therapy. Clinical studies over the last 30+ years have documented that a regular meditation practice has significant effects on the mind and body. Studies show meditation improves immune function, slows aging, expands awareness, to name just a few.
Yoga Therapy gives you easy to use tools that you can incorporate into your daily life to help you manage your health and well-being. It may be a 10 minute breathing/meditation exercise, a 20 minute morning routine that includes dry brushing and a warm oil massage, or a night time yoga nidra for a deep, restful sleep. Your practice is designed around your needs and the amount of time you can set aside to recharge.
